Best Trail Running Shoes - What to look for in a trail shoe

Getting the right shoes is essential where ever you are running. However, there is a fundamental different between running on road and off road running. One caters for a level and solid terrain, the other has to offer grip, support and comfort for running over uneven, often soft and changing ground. As with all running shoes, over recent years an enormous amount of technology has gone into how trail or cross country shoes are produced. Perhaps the most obvious difference is the grip on the sole of the shoe. Good trail shoes will much deeper tread or studs to offer better grip on slippery or muddy ground.

The second aspect that often stands out with trail running shoes is the shallow heels and reduced impact-absorbing cushioning. The requirement for cushioning is not as great with trail shoes as they are designed for softer terrain. However, being closer to the ground they also offer better stability.

If you do routes that include section both on and off road, you may find a dedicated a low-soled, studded cross country shoe too much. You may be better off looking for a multi terrain shoe. It really depends on the routes your planning to take.

Finally, as always when shopping for running shoes, you need to know your foot type (Normal, flat footed, or high arched) and whether you over or under pronate. You can test this yourself to an extent, or many running shoe shops will have a treadmill to check how your feet land when you are running.
